The State Office for Archaeology of Saxony, in cooperation with the Zittau Municipal Museums, presents an exhibition on aerial archaeology.
Did you know that a trained eye can recognize archaeological traces from the air that are invisible from the ground? For this reason, aerial archaeologists from the State Office for Archaeology of Saxony have been systematically exploring, observing, and documenting Saxony's rich archaeological landscape from the air for over 30 years. The aerial photographs provide essential insights into archaeological monuments without disturbing them. Aerial archaeology is therefore "non-destructive." In the exhibition "High Flights. Aerial Photographs and Archaeology in Saxony," the State Office for Archaeology of Saxony now offers a unique glimpse into its extensive aerial photograph archive. The exhibition organizers reveal why it is possible to see things from the air that are located underground and present terrain models of significant archaeological sites. The exhibition invites visitors to playfully try their hand at being an aerial archaeologist, showcasing artifacts from selected sites and much more. Alongside the aerial archaeological photographs, treasures from the archaeological collection of the Zittau Municipal Museums are presented. The exhibition is further enhanced by an engaging series of lectures and guided tours on the topic of archaeology.
