In his cyanotypes, Sebastian Hänel seeks to capture traces of place, material, and process through the interplay of light and shadow. Since sun and water are essential components of this early photographic technique, the images are often created in the natural environment of ponds, lakes, rivers, or the sea, sometimes across Europe. Changes during the exposure time result in a composition in real time, the evolution of which is depicted in many of the works. Conceptual and spontaneous approaches intertwine here in ever-surprising ways. At the exhibition opening, the artist invites visitors to try the technique for themselves.
