MATEŘINKA is a festival of professional puppet theaters and the only one in the Czech Republic and all of Europe that focuses exclusively on plays for the youngest audiences. The selected festival program includes performances by state theaters, independent ensembles, private groups, and soloists.
MATEŘINKA is a festival with a long tradition. Its origins date back to 1972, when the first Czech national performance of this kind took place under this name in Liberec. The venues were initially (alternating) Liberec and České Budějovice. Since 1991, the festival has been held every two years in Liberec only.
MATEŘINKA is a competitive festival. At the end, the best productions, selected by an expert jury, are awarded prizes.
MATEŘINKA offers a varied accompanying program (non-competitive). It includes the most interesting "non-puppet" productions for the very young, street performances, demonstrations of work from KALD at the Prague DAMU, etc. A permanent part of the festival also includes exhibitions, concerts, workshops, and evening performances of plays for adults, presented with a Celtic flair by the festival organizer, the Naive Theater Liberec.
