At Frisk, free jazz improvisation meets a jazzcore-style broadside with a pinch of noise and traces of not just Ugric-Finnish folklore. Recently, the trio Frisk has been working on partially composed musical structures in which rhythmic structures emerge amidst sonic explosions. Conceptual sophistication goes hand in hand with playful lightness – and from under the free jazz cloak, the voice of a muezzin sometimes resonates.
In the midst of the noise and clamour, there is also delicacy and a joy of playing. Bottomless imagination, creative unruliness. This is not for the faint of heart.
Vít Hoigr plays drums and percussion with absolute reliability, with drive and sonic breadth – he really plays, which is not a matter of course for drummers. He is the connecting element in the best sense. Guitarist František R. Václavík undermines, foams, condenses, and crushes sound matter with unconventional playing techniques – with pleasure and an unerring sense. And Zdeněk Závodný on tenor, soprano, and sopranino saxophone as well as bass clarinet evokes alpine-like folds, similar to those that once created the Himalayas.
