The core of the exhibition consists of 1:72 scale 3D reconstruction models of local castles, which were created based on exact technical measurements of preserved building fragments and the surrounding terrain. The models present the earliest form of the Grabštejn, Hamrštejn, Frýdlant, Návarov, Jezdec, and Roimund castles.
The goal of the exhibition is to show the connections and contexts of local castles. Building on the historical context in the wider sense of the word, it connects with architectural, military, heraldic, or religious aspects, always to a degree corresponding to the level of our current knowledge. At the same time, we will look for geological and geographical, social, or even political contexts. Because a castle is not just a building in the landscape, a castle is also a strategic stronghold, an administrative center, a residence and refuge, and could even be the seat of a religious community.
Every castle has its own unique life. It was founded in some way, developed in some way, and ended in some way. Sometimes in ruins, sometimes transformed into a different object, sometimes completely disappeared even from memory to such an extent that we do not even know what it was actually called. This context is also taken into account by the exhibition in the contrasts between the ideal reconstructions of the models and the documented current situation. The exhibition is realized in cooperation with the Curia Vítkov center, which will provide functional replicas of medieval war machines in full scale and offer a program for accompanying activities, especially workshops focused on medieval crafts and daily life in castles. A representative publication is being prepared for the exhibition.
