Galas are a relic from a time when glamorous public celebrations were put on with great effort and tuned into or attended by millions of people. There were gigantic decorations, orchestras, ballets, international star guests, gold confetti, wind machines, and elegantly graying hosts with mischievous humor.
Now, when Christoph Marthaler directs a gala, while people are still honored in the gap between the overflowing bouquets of flowers to the right and left of the stage, the gala is actually, for once, preoccupied entirely with itself, celebrating the essence of the gala in all imaginable sounds, forms, and colors. In Marthaler's gala, the gala celebrates a musical feast of simultaneity! The past, present, and future of this wonderful art form merge into a single first last second.
