A romantic comedy based on the renowned novel by Jane Austen.
Isobel McArthur Jane Austen's (1775–1817) 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice is one of the most famous works of British literature and, thanks to film adaptations, is almost synonymous with the general perception of women's romantic literature. The author depicts the life of the Bennet couple, who are raising five daughters of marrying age. The tumultuous near-misses and eventual coming together of Elizabeth and the unapproachable Mr. Darcy capture the attractive power of fated feelings. Among the best-known film adaptations are the 1995 six-part series starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle or the 2005 film with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen. Six maids perform Jane Austen's iconic novel between carrying out chamber pots and making beds. They were there, and without them, the romantic plots would not have reached their famous happy ending. This inventive theatrical adaptation offers unique acting opportunities: each of the maids portrays not only one of the novel's mothers or daughters but also their male counterparts. Famous 'chick lit' thus gains a playful perspective and irony that would undoubtedly amuse the author of the novel herself. This clever romantic comedy with songs completely enchanted London's West End and won the prestigious Laurence Olivier Award. The Czech premiere will be created by director Jakub Nvota, who demonstrated extraordinary sensitivity for relationships and women's stories in Mikve and Želary.
