Umgebinde houses are a unique phenomenon of the Three-Country Region, which is also known as the Land of the Umgebinde Houses. The first timber-framed structures arrived here from the German side of the border in the Middle Ages and gradually developed into a characteristic house type – with a partially masonry hallway and a partially wooden living area, often finished with white clay plaster.
These houses, shaped by the echo of weaving rooms and the history of the glass craft, are today restored with great care by private owners, associations, and companies. They serve various functions today – from vibrant residential homes to open-air museums – and each of them has its own story.
On the last weekend of May each year, they open their interiors that are otherwise inaccessible – a visit is well worth it!
