The audiovisual project by Brönnimann and Optickle creates the soundscape of a possible climate catastrophe - monumental and at the same time of great beauty. Their performance creates a hypnotic, progressive sound that pulsates into the future with historical depth. Tipping Point is accompanied by the outstanding musicians Christy Doran (guitar) and Imran Khan (tabla).
Although the project communicates on an artistic and abstract level, it refers to a very concrete problem. In climate debates, there is often talk of a "tipping point" - the point at which a previously linear process abruptly accelerates or fundamentally changes due to feedback effects. As climate research shows, such processes can lead to irreversible changes within a short space of time. This is exactly what this project reminds us of - and makes it tangible: visual and audio material inspired by the discussion about the climate is remixed live. The dramaturgy of the evening is created in the moment - just as unpredictable as the course of the climate itself.
Jan Galega Brönnimann is regarded as an innovative border crosser. Over the past 30 years, he has made a name for himself as a composer, bandleader and soloist and has worked with Nils Petter Molvaer, Sidsel Endresen, Pierre Favre, Saadet Türköz, Hans Koch, Aly Keïta, Eivind Aarset, Lucas Niggli and Kenny Werner, among others. His music has taken him to renowned festivals and stages worldwide.
Optickle is a Swiss artist collective (consisting of Sam Radvila, Hugo Ryser and Manuel Schüpfer) that specialises in live visuals and audiovisual installations. In collaboration with Jan Galega Brönnimann, they create hypnotic, multi-layered visual worlds that weave everyday impressions and urban and natural motifs into visual sound spaces in real time.
Christy Doran is an Irish-Swiss jazz guitarist who co-founded the influential fusion and free jazz group OM in 1972 and has since achieved worldwide fame. He combines elements of jazz-rock, avant-garde improvisation and world music in projects such as New Bag and Sound Fountain and is regarded as an innovative and versatile guitar pioneer. He has also been a lecturer at the Lucerne School of Music for decades.
Imran Khan is a renowned tabla virtuoso from New Delhi, who was introduced to the fine tradition of the Delhi gharana as a child and today impresses with his modern, warm tone and deep repertoire. With performances on international stages such as the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, festivals in Japan, Nigeria and Europe, he accompanies celebrated artists and also conducts workshops and music lessons in India and New York.
