A dramatization of the successful novel about searching for one's roots and memories that cannot be silenced.
Jaroslav Rudiš, Jiří Janků and Pavel Khek. A fascinating dramatization of the award-winning novel by Jaroslav Rudiš, which is a meditation on what it means to "belong somewhere," and a reminder that human stories are like trains – it is never just about reaching the destination; the journey itself is also important. Winterberg's story, set in the melancholic atmosphere of a train compartment, connects the fates of people from different corners of Europe and shows how collective history shapes the individual. The main theme of both the book and our production is coming to terms with tragic events, as well as with one's own life and aging. One of the many reasons why we decided to add this title to our repertoire is the fact that part of the story takes place right in Liberec. The story also reminds us that understanding the past is key to navigating the present. Through the main character's personal memories, broader contexts of European history are revealed, reflecting the transformations of cities, borders, and human lives. Our new theatrical adaptation thus brings not only a melancholic road movie along railway tracks, but also a reflection on how historical events shape us. Winterberg's Last Journey is not just the story of one man, but a mirror of a society that is still learning to live with its past.
