He was already an established collaborator at the Theater Na Zábradlí when he wrote the absurd play The Memorandum (Vyrozumění) in 1965, which deals with corporate communication. Careers are built or destroyed by the artificial bureaucratic language of Ptydepe, and the artificial language of misinformation is not only a source of misunderstanding, but also a tool of oppression and coercion. Havel depicts the officials' games for positions and privileges with brilliant exaggeration and stirring humor. It is remarkable that his play, like all good plays, is still very relevant today. The desire to manipulate fellow human beings and cast aside moral values and even all restraints for the sake of career advancement was not only the prerogative of the 1960s generation. Even today, there are bureaucrats who blackmail their superiors with their weaknesses, obscure communication, flood the room with misinformation, and use their elbows when a promotion is within reach. Even today, there are bosses who abuse their position, blackmail their subordinates, turn them into servants, and deny them recognition. Even today, there is gossip, denunciation, and all kinds of intrigue in companies. We may have freedom, but at the same time, we have a talent for making ourselves unfree through our ambition or our greed. And making fun of this nonsense, laughing heartily at what is in reality more or less monstrous, can be very liberating.
