30 minutes before the start Introduction
The Scottish Queen Mary Stuart has been in English captivity for 20 years. Unjustly, she is sure of it. The accusations that she killed her husband and prepared an assassination attempt on Queen Elizabeth are in reality just a pretext to protect the throne from her. Opposite her is Queen Elizabeth of England. She is torn between the will of the people, her personal interests and fear for her throne.
Schiller portrays the two women as opposing characters in his tragedy, which premiered in 1800. However, despite their different dispositions, it is power that they both strive for. A web of calculation, corruptibility and intrigue unfolds, in which different interests intertwine. In the end, only one can survive at the top.
