Giacomo Puccini One of the most famous works in the worldwide opera repertoire, the love story of the dazzling singer Floria Tosca and the painter Mario Cavaradossi, could perhaps have developed into a boring love story with a happy ending had it not been set during a wartime crisis. The famous city of Rome is occupied by the hostile armies of the Kingdom of Naples, and the established order is being radically altered under the overwhelming power of Police Chief Scarpia and his cronies. Where are the boundaries of humanity, love, and conscience, and how can one live honestly and in love when it is impossible to do so? Is there another possibility lurking beyond the horizon? The magnificent Tosca, composed by Puccini based on a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, which is based on the drama of the same name by Victorien Sardou, premiered at the dawn of the new millennium on January 14, 1900, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome. After more than 20 years, it returns to the Liberec stage.
